I'd say that this probably stems from the fact that IDEs were generally trash until recently, that there was always "one missing link". The IDEs that are worth learning have a pretty high learning curve. The crew that "can't be bothered to learn a complex IDE when the one they have is fine" generally have a lot of past experience. So what you see is not a truism, it's a coincidence and a function of reinforced status quo.
I agree with Max. IJ, so long as they don't start charging obscene sums for it, rules. I bought an Apple TiBook recently because I wanted to "switch" and JetBrains was starting to support the combo, but promptly sold it the next day because IJ didn't run perfectly on it. I have no time to code on anything less these days.
