Back again! Just after I sent the last message I remembered an 
aphorism that probably sums up your dilemma.

Comes from a statistician John Tukey (as in various Tukey's tests):

"Far better an approximate answer to the right question that may be 
difficult to frame than a precise answer to the wrong question which 
is always easy to ask."

Can't say it better than that!
