Here's another answer which doesn't answer your specific question - remember the old Scout trick:

Hold your watch level, and turn until the the hour hand points in the direction of the sun. Mentally divide the angle between the hour hand and 12.

That's an approximate NS line. It's each to figure out which end is N and which end is S since the sun goes from East to South to West as the day progresses (in the N hemisphere).

If you're really only interested in 30° accuracy, the above method could form the basis of a very simple program as follows:

At midnight the sun is due North. You can assume it moves 15° clockwise per hour. So at say 5pm, which is 17.00, the sun is at 15 x 17 = 255° clockwise from North. That is, a little South of West.
