One Sun tech I talked to also recommended trying 1600x1000 for use with the SR2 as it is the same ratio, though not the native resolution.
Did you try 1600x1024? That's built in to Sun Ray, so you wouldn't have to wrestle with 'utresdef' in order to use it.
So I tried altering this definition by changing the xres and yres values accordingly. This seemed to work somewhat. I got the lower resolution, but instead of the image being stretched across the whole display, I get a black band at the bottom and right edge.
That's because the timing being driven to the monitor is still 1680x1050 but only the top-left 1600x1000 is being advertised as usable to the Sun Ray server, so it's only painting that region.
PS - Any idea if the SR2 will ever support higher resolutions?
SR2 could probably be stretched to handle 1680-wide if enough customers express an interest in the 1680x1050 timing. Did you open a support case with Sun? Ask the support guys to add a Service Request to CR 6533980.
It seems like the first-gen SunRays all provided higher resolution, so I'm not sure why they would choose to cripple the latest-gen devices.
First-generation Sun Rays went up to 1280x1024. The 1g was the first price-listed model to go beyond that, up to 1920x1200. The SR2 has a graphics subsystem whose cost and capabilities were balanced to satisfy the many customers who don't need -- and don't want to pay for -- the ability to drive 1920x1200. Those are the people who complained when we did the 1g; they'd have preferred us to do a cost-reduced SR1 instead. Most of them would have been happy with the SR2 going up to 1280x1024 but the cost differential between that and 1600x1200 was next to nothing so we did 1600x1200, and we probably have enough headroom to go to 1680. If you need to go bigger than that then that's what the 2FS is for. OttoM. __ ottomeister Disclaimer: These are my opinions.
