Check the monitor's configuration settings. If it was trying to rescale the 1600xWhatever to fill the panel's native 1680x1050 then that could be the cause of the awfulness. There's often a configuration setting that tells the monitor whether to try to rescale or not; if this monitor has that option then tell it to not rescale and just display the smaller raster pixel-for-pixel.
