From: Cyrillius J. Maximus:
"There is a possibility that termination is a possibility on the drive
instead of relying the controller to do so."
I hope you're right! It's a 20 gig hard drive and I think it should do
admirably. I've still got to figure out how I'm going to mount this bad
boy. It's an inch and a half thick! I'm guessing the open 5 1/2" bay under
the CD-ROM with some sort of cradle/sled is my best bet.
"I have a question about the drive though.......does it spin up or
anything.........cause if it does then it probably works.......scsi drives
are hard to kill....very hard
to kill.......especially the older ones"
I hope you're right, again. Even a 2 gig hard drive would be nice. I
assume that you're referring to the old 2 gig WD Enterprise HD that came
with the computer. It spins up for a few seconds when you boot the
computer, then stops.
"So if the drive spins up at all.......then the drive might be all
right......My Barracuda's all have option for termination on the drive....i
own about 15 drives total......all still working. . .
Check the termination.........."
My information comes from the manual for this particular hard drive (Seagate
Barracuda ST118273LC). It states that this model does "not have internal
terminators or any othe way of adding termination to the drive. External
termination for these drives must be supplied by the host equipment."
"On that note......termination doesn't denote that a drive is
unsupported.....it mainly has to do with the driver that your disk
formatting utility is using....since the disk tools image you are using is
fairly old......then in all likelihood the drive will work you just need a
newer version of disk tools........one from an 8.5 cd should do
it.....maybe 9.1 even"
Hmmm! That has possibilities. I have both of those OS CD's. Thanks,
Cyrillius, even if you are a scsi laden person! You're all right!

From: David Nuzum:
"First the Seagate drive, is it Apple's Drive SetUp that tells you that
the drive is unsupported?"
The boot disk for Disk Tools (OS 7.5.3) informs me that the drive is
"unsupported." I'm guessing this isn't the Apple Hard Drive Set-Up, but an
earlier utility.
"Apples drive setup does not support all brands of hard drives and if
this is what you using then " unsupported" simply means unsupported and is
not telling you
anything about the condition of the drive."
Your probably right. My guess is that this drive is fine. Just getting it
formatted is the issue.
"Now you say you have a copy of FWB, have you tried to format the Seagate
using FWB? The odds are that it will. Assuming the Seagate is good
otherwise."
I was wondering if this was a possibility. The version I have is FWB Hard
Drive Toolkit 2.0.6, which will allow use of non-Apple hard drives for OS 8
and above. So you're telling me the FWB is a boot disk, is that right?
"Also I think it is worth trying FWB on the drive that you believe to be
DOA."
It's certainly worth a try. It spins up when the computer is booted, but
stops spinning within a few seconds. Comments?
"PS. The wording in your messages tells me you are confusing SCSI and ATA
Drives."
This is certainly a possibility. My experience in messing with computer
hardware has been limited to ATA drives (my C-500, iMac DV 400, and numerous
evil Windows machines). I know there is a difference, because the hard
drive I ordered to replace the internal was was an ATA and wouldn't work
(obviously). That's okay, I slapped it in a firewire enclosure and it'll
make a nice external hard drive.
Thanks from a scsi bimbo! I appreciate your help, David!
