Tell us which CD-ROM extension you are using.
Also, which version of OS you are using.

Or....would it be possible this is not a 'Apple' ROM'd unit ?
Your symptoms indicate this, but others may be able to shed more light.
But you say this is a Apple unit.

Have you tried to boot from an actual maintenace utility disc or System
installer disc instead of something you burned ?

Also, when you load a (what you think is a) bootable disc, does it mount ?
But when you select it as a boot disc in the startup disc control panel it
hangs up ?
