I can read CDs with no problem. I can play music CDs, but not hear them because of the audio cable. The audio cable fits my other Panasonic CD-ROM drive, but not the Apple one. Everything's fine except when I try to boot. THen the thing hangs.
Does it really hang or is it just slow to boot from the CD?
We put one of the older Apple ROMed CD drives in our C600 a few years back. The speed of the Apple drive is something like 4X or 6X. It is painfully slow in booting from a CD. It is even slower when mounting one of the CDs that come with the various magazines like Mac Addict and Mac Format.
You should be able to tell if it is just slow by listening (you can usually hear the CD drive spinning) and by watching the CD drive's access lights. If the lights are blinking it is still reading.
However, I might be all wrong, and that may not be the problem.
