hope others are reading your replies and helping me deduce.

you say bootable - what are you using ?
homemade or a utility disc such as disk warrior ?

if the apple extension from 9.1 is recognizing the drive and is making it
functional for reading CDs, then am suspecting this 'bootable' CD.
