I hear it can support external DVD players with the new version of DVD Player. I wasn't able to find iDVD on the install disks so maybe that either doesn't exist or at least isn't included.

iDVD is stand along app you have to buy . It also requires a G4 CPU does not work with G3. It is possible to use Apple DVD player with external DVD player in either Jag or Panther. Both require installing Apple DVD player using Pacifist. Jag requires a samll hack. Panther it varies from version to version. Worked fine for me 10.3, 10.3.1 , 10.3.2 , 10.3.3 and then 10.3.4 required a small hack. 10.3.5 worked fine again and then the latest 10.3.6 requires a hack again !
Let me know what OS version you are using and is it a firewire setup or what ? Also what kind of DVD player? I'll try look up the info on getting it to work. (I think I have notes on how I did it !).
I guess what I'm trying to do is get video tapes onto
my drive and turn them into DVDs. I'm having trouble
with both processes. I tried BTV for getting the data
into the computer but the audio and video go out of
sync for some reason and so it isn't usable. I used
Toast to burn the DVD, but the processing takes about
10 minutes for one minute of movie. I'm wondering if
there isn't a better way. Maybe I'm asking too much of
my aging equipment.

I've had great luck doing Video work on my Umax machine. mpg1 & 2 , .avi , VCD, SVCD, DVD and Divx all work well. I have not done any Video tape to DVD's yet. Takes a lot of disk space I believe. The place for all the answers is:

click on forum at the top and then find the Mac Video forum. Great group of helpful people. Lots to read the forums go way back. You do need to join before you can post questions. But it's free and easy to do. One word of warning. You need to either read through or do a search of the forum before you post questions. Several people will give you hell if you ask questions that answers are already posted for. It has a search feature so fairly easy to look through. best of luck Will S
