I have my old Epson Stylus Color 3000 connected to my S900 (w. Sonnet G4 450, running OS X 10.3.7) via an Epson USB adapter cable and I've downloaded the Epson 17a driver and installed it.
So far, I'm unable to get the Epson native driver to work - just the GIMP-Print one. I can find something in Library > Printers > Epson called SC3000.plugin, but if I select it in the printer setup dialog, it changes back to CUPS + GIMP-Print v4.2.5 when I click on Apply Changes.
I'd really like to us an Epson driver, as the output I'm getting in OS X is visibly inferior to the same files printed in OS 9.1 (rougher curves in type, for example), and I can't find any way to access the Epson Utilities such as print head alignment except by restarting in System 9.
Epson has not responded to my inquiry - probably consider it an Apple problem. Does anyone have any suggestions?
Many thanks,
Eric
Few if any of the Printer companies have updated the drivers for older printers to OSX. Is the 17a driver suppose to work with OSX? If so have you carefully read & followed install directions? It can be tricky to get them to work. Gimp print is a godsend for printers without native drivers. I'm using a older Epson SC 850 serial/ parallel printer ports with a USB to parallel cable and gimp print. These drivers have worked better with different versions of the Mac OSX then others. Currently using with 10.3.7 and the Gimp print that came with OSX rather then a downloaded version. Here is how I get it to work best. I had the same issues as you with the poor quality prints. I have found that it defaults to a low quality test print setting of 180 DPI and htat is the problem with my printer. To fix this go to the top under file in most any app or the finder. From file choice "print" a box will come up with a number of choices. Your choices may be different since it's a different printer. At the top is
Printer: choose the name of your printer
Presets: standard
third box has no label
but says "copies & pages" change this to
"Printer features" I now get 2 new boxes
Output Resolutions(& Output mode where you choose Color or grey scale): it defaults every time to the test page of 180 DPI and looks like really poor quality. i have 2 other choices. 360 DPI or 720 DPI . 720 gives me the quality I'm used to . You may well see even higher setting with your printer. I need to change this setting every time before I print. In Jaguar it would save the setting I changed it to but not in Panther. I hope this works for you. You will have to boot to OS 9 to use the print head cleaner. later Will S
