I have my old Epson Stylus Color 3000 connected to my S900 (w. Sonnet G4 450, running OS X 10.3.7) via an Epson USB adapter cable and I've downloaded the Epson 17a driver and installed it.

I got fed up and let my Photo 700 dry up and die (I finally decided to stop buying the expensive ink for it) after discovering there is no OS-X driver for it.
With no fine-tuning available for optimizing the prints, it just turned into a so-so printer.
I was amazed, however, that the printer showed up as available on the printer setup utility after I used the parallel to USB adapter cable that came with the printer.
It even showed up as a shared printer on the other computer, even with the proper name "Epson Photo 700".
Only thing I can suggest is it seems OS-X is very picky about where certain items end up in order for things to function properly, not much different then OS-9 except there are more layers to go through to get to right location.
I've even had specific instructions that mentions the importance of this when I downloaded updates, etc.
Maybe there is some sort of documentation that has this detail with the Epson driver you downloaded ?
