Note that I and the OP have opposite problems.

In his case, the default printer selection won't stick; SM updates its setting every time the user selects a printer and always remembers the last printer.

In my case, my printer selection does stick, and no matter what other printer I select ad hoc, the next print job reverts back to the stuck selection (which may or may not be the system default).
