The basic problem is that I don't have a serial cable anywhere! (I thought I was done with such old technologies!)
IPMI is getting more and more common, but serial ports are still the most robust (in my experience) way to get a console on a remote server.
Get a Cyclades serial console server (or something similar) from eBay. :-)
