SSD woul definitely bring the power, speed & sound benefits of flash. It only lacks the perfect recovery of a read-only root fs. A big improvement over spinning media nevertheless.
Regarding reserved unused space on an SSD, Anand recently recommended 20% reserved, and more recently stated 'the more you reserve, the better it will perform' (paraphrasing).
