In the horizontal plane, I have done it with two large diaphragm stereo pairs on top of each other and have been amazed how accurate it sounded. Subsequently, I have modified a single pair to output WXY, with better results since the capsules are closer. I am now making a mike in which the capsules are touching vertically.
