On Wednesday, "[EMAIL PROTECTED]" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> typed:

 ] different modem this time
 ] this one is on a 486dx66, 8MB RAM, 250MB HDD, win3.11
] Ran a comprehensive test and it showed the modem not functioning.
] I've set the switches on the back to com2 although they don't show irq
 ] settings. Yes, internal modem.

You'll have to disable the existing COM2, otherwise they will fight
for the commands and everything will get horribly confused,
expecially since they're different UARTs and everything.

] Now, one thing did come up in all the various tests, coms one and two don't
] have the up-to-date uart chip, com 3 has uart 16550 but when I had the
] modem set to com 3 it knocked out the mouse when trying to run trumpet
] dialler. The test also showed that com4 does not exist.

When I had an internal 2400 modem, it and did the same thing on the
386. So I moved the mouse to COM2 and then had no problems.

 ] I set the comports in windows to com1 irq4, I/O 03F8 and com3 irq4 I/O 03E8
] That didn't help. Only by setting the modem on com 2 did it not interfere
 ] with the mouse.

This is because COM1 and COM3 use the same IRQ (4) and cannot
(always) reliably work both at the same time.

] There is only the modem, controller and video cards, and the mouse is the
] only serial device on com 1.
] The modem has 6 switches with a little diagram indicating which ones go up
] or down according to the com setting desired.

Hehe my modem had the 6 switches, but the diagram was upside down.
(Well it wasn't really since there was a legend but the prints were
the opposite of what you'd expect.)

] I got all the software installed and tuned on this thing anyway, took
] awhile to find a 16 bit browser!

I know opera is still easy to find for w31, and theres still plenty
in simtelnet.
