Well thank you Karen. But frankly I can't really say what my dream
life is like, I'm usually asleep when it happens ;)

I take this to mean you have already filled it with some 500
to 600 MB of data. If so you are already at great risk overwriting
what is already there. To be safe I think you should stop using this
disk right now, at least if you have not managed to backup your data
yet. (but maybe you have already unplugged when I type this)

I don't have much experience using the backup software that comes
with DOS, as I usually use pkzip or similar with disk spanning if I
need to backup to floppies. The best thing would of course be if
anyone could lend you some HD space and then use DOS Interlnk/
Intersrv, or Laplink or similar to transfer your data back and forth
over the serial or parallel port.
The only thing I can say about the backup software that comes with
DOS, is that if you backup your data using one version of DOS - stick
to it - as I have heard different versions are not always compatible
with one another. Probably wise then, in any case, to keep a copy of
your backup software in uncompressed format on a bootable floppy,
ready to run.
I hope you succeed in getting your HD properly configured, if this
was the problem, and that you will let us know how it turned out.
All the best,
Bjorn
