Hi Karen,
KL>do i need to install all of dos before doing anything else?
No.
You only need to use "format c: /s" or else "sys c:" after the format.
This will write io.sys, msdos.sys and command.com. These will give
you all the basics like dir, cd, copy, etc. If you want xcopy, format,
fdisk, etc. then you will need to copy them from floppy to the root
dir. (You can move them to a \dos dir later, but it's easier if you
dump all your essential files in c:\ at the very start.)
KL>once i boot from the flopy, will i be able to just install the
KL>speech, and do everything after that?
Yes, but don't forget that as well as having format on your floppy you
will need fdisk as well. It's a good idea to also have sys and your
favourite "disk navigator" program also. My personal favourite is
List by Vern Buerg, but I've no idea how this is with a speech program.
KL>I may have to do this on my own, without sight assistance,
I'm sure you're very competent, Karen, but reformatting your hard-drive
is a pretty scary operation. I'd reccomend if at all possible you should
have a sighted person close by, even if they're not computer-literate.
If you have any problems with your speech program you'll be like a fish
out of water...
KL>i am going to install it to be certain. will this be a hidden file?
Are you referring to the speech program? There's no way we can tell
how it will install or what other resources it might need. Is there
any way you can experiment by trying to install the speech program
on another computer first, just to see how it goes?
Best of luck, anyway.
Mike
