Hi-

I got all the rpms from the suse 6 portion of www.gnome.org. I did not
use yast because the website warns that using yast may cause a lot of
dependency errors to crop up. Here is what I did; worked for me.

*downloaded all the rpms (minus devel except for gnome-libs-devel and
imlib-devel. These also failed the dependency check)
into separate directory to lessen operator confusion
*got out of windowmaker and gnome 99.8 to a console. I just felt more
comfortable with this
*attempted to do an rpm -Uvh *rpm in the directory I was in. That
caused me to see all kinds of failed dependencies for gtk/glib. I was
kind of lost at this point because I had compiled the gtk/glib stuff
myself. I grabbed the gtkn/glibn packages and installed them for the
purposes of getting stuff straightened out
*everything went except for some missing file messages which rpm
ignored and continued
*then I reinstalled my gtk/glib stuff.
*now I think I will have to download and upgrade the devel stuff.
Thats the only way I can compile stuff.

I booted windowomaker and got gnome working but I had a few issues.
My issues were with earlier compiled programs looking for a link
library which was gone. These apps included gedit, gmc, and xchat.
I removed the self-compiled gedit and replaced it with the rpm and got
gedit working. I also did this with gmc. I finally recompiled xchat
as this is my favorite irc client of all time.

Everything now works except for balsa. Balsa wants the old gtk libs.
I dont use balsa but I want to get things back the way they were. I
dont know what happens with gtk/glib when you do an rpm install. I
honestly think that they go somewhere else other than the default
/usr/lib since rpm -Uvh *rpm could not find my perfectly good gtk/glib
self-compiled libs. More than likely, no entry in the rpm database is
the scoundrel. I can compile gnome apps and gtk apps now so things
seem okay.

I know this seems like a meandering text and I apologize. I wanted to
try to cover exactly what I did to get gnome working here.
