Thanks. A few days ago, I checked out a several of the above configs --
my bios puts the printer port at irq 7 (not auto). The printer's
definitely at /dev/lp0, because that's the port I'm using to print under
root. Soundcard's at irq 9.

I eliminated any soundcard conflicts -- just to be sure -- by compiling
a special kernel with *no* sound, but the problem persisted.

I have a hunch (but nothing more) that it's permission related --
otherwise, I wouldn't be able to print under root.

The only problem is, I've "relaxed" the permissions for everything in
/var/spool/lpd/, but nothing's done the trick. I've done the same for
lp, lpd, & lpr as well.

I don't know enough about printing in Linux to have an idea of what
other permissions might be involved.
