I guess you are right. Gcc is needed for the 2.0 kernels,
but the 2.2 can use either egcs or gcc.
However, I believe the 2.2 series were INTENDED to
be compiled with egcs.
I guess people with 5.3 and want the 2.2 series kernel,
can compile with gcc; but I would expect them to run
into problems.
The 2.2 series is written with libc6 in mind, so was egcs.
