I also got the LIBDIR warning when running "make install' on
the 12/31/98 cvs version of alsa-utils even after
adding the correct LIBDIR (usr/lib) to /etc/ld.so.conf and
running ldconfig. In addition to specifying adding
LIBDIR to ld.so.conf the "warning" I got also mentioned
using the LLIBDIR flag. I couldn't figure out how to include
the LLIBDIR flag at the time but in reading the man page
for gcc last evening it seems that:
make install --gcc --LLIBDIR <--L/usr/lib, in my case> might work
I'd appreciate comments on whether this is correct use
of the syntax. I haven't had time to try it out since reading
the gcc man page.
For others intending to install the alsa-drivers, I should point
out that I also had to compile the most recent versions of automake,
autoconf, and libtools that are available at sunsite on my
SuSE 5.1 (kernel 2.0.36) system. (I'm away from my machine and do not
have version numbers.)
Even with the LIBDIR warning, the alsa-utils did compile
and I can play wav, midi and real audio files.
First time I've been able to play ra files at 16-bit in linux, they sound
*a lot* better than playing them at 8-bit. I highly recommend the
alsa-driver. My card is the Creative Ensoniq (ES1371 chipset).
I do get a Joystick "addressing" error (in essence, address is not in
correct range) when running alsactl. Hopefully, compiling against
the correct libraries will fix this.
Take care,
Jesse McDonnell
