Tomas and W.D. McKinney,
Thanks, Tomas, for your response. I ran cvscompile,
make, and make install * without any additional argument *
again this evening and didn't get any warnings! Everything compiled
though I'm still getting the joystick addressing error from alsactl.
It's not a problem for me especially since sound is *still* working.
Solving the problem was a matter of first getting an updated configuration
utility file, SuSEconfig.kdm, from the SuSE ftp site. Running SuSEconfig
to update my system I had gotten a "SuSEconfig cannot find
/lib/YAST/SuSEconfig functions" warning message. A search on the SuSE
Support DataBase pointed to an article on this very warning message and
the solution,the SuSEconfig.kdm file.
This may also help you W.D. if you are receiving the same
warning when running YAST or SuSEconfig from the command line. The problem is
apparently a result of updating/installing "non-SuSE" KDE packages and is
also present in earlier (before late June,1998) SuSE KDE packages.
I compiled and installed KDE Beta 4 and the QT 1.33 libraries from source
files some months ago.)
Thanks for the offer to check out the alsa configuration
files. Thankfully, I no longer need to take you up on the offer! However,
if you need a break from trying to get to the bottom of your system lockup
problem <g> (sorry I cannot help!), the source files for the alsa
drivers, libraries, and utilities can be got at http://alsa.jcu.cz.
Thanks again and good luck,
Jesse McDonnell
