Luca,

If I remember correctly, doesn't the 3c509 come in "pnp" mode?
If so, have you used the disk that comes with it (in DOS) to change 
from pnp to ISA mode?

The "ether=0,0,eth1" append line is the same that I use, and it 
does work correctly.

It wouldn't hurt to check /etc/rc.config and check that you have not
made any typos in your eth setup.
