Erm... I've upgraded the BIOS (to INET36WW) and the kernel (to 2.6.22) and the results are much better now. s2ram -f -s works fine both from X and from console, recovering the video modes without manual interaction. Maybe you can add another entry with the new BIOS version. Sorry for the trouble.
