Hello,
During the seventies ARAMCO published a booklet for it's workers in arab oil
compounds on fermentation and distillation of alcohol (ethanol). On the
basis, no doubt that they would be doing such things anyway and as a
concerned employer, the should see that their employees did it safely. What
caring forsight.
My memory is that it was called "The Blue Flame"
Details of a compound still were given and operating information provided to
avoid producing methanol or other toxic compounds. I recall the operation to
be very simple and based on a distillation stack top thermometer. An abiding
memory was the smell at the start from the still when it started to run.

I no longer have the booklet but did build the still in stainless steel. It
worked fine and with two passes would get to about 80% alcohol by volume
though we diluted it down again for drinking. Lovely stuff and very pure
with rarely a hangover. However, I suspect that your object is not to get
drunk.
Yield was about 10% from a starting mix of 3lbs sugar to an Imperial gallon
of water for the ferment.
If any one still has a copy of "The Blue Flame" I would appreciate a
photocopy.
