Verily.

I'm sure there's no need for you to apologise Gustl. I doubt anyone
on the list will tar Americans in general with this brush. Even now
most people distinguish between Americans and Washington, the first
they generally like, the second they generally don't. But it's to be
expected that there'll be a small minority of individuals who'll be
indistinguishable from Washington at its worst. I think it's
understood well enough.

Anyway, I think there's a need for me to apologise. Young master
Brian (I think he's not young, but let's give him the benefit of the
doubt, it's easier to forgive a young fool than an old one, with more
hope too) is a newcomer and thus still on moderation, as are all
newcomers until they establish their bona-fides as non-spammers and
non-trolls. So I could have stopped his post. I didn't just hit the
"Approve" button, I did read it, and was very disgusted.

I'm aware that I might not be the most reasonable person around when
it comes to dealing with blind bigotry like that. For nearly 40 years
I've been working against this "problem" where poor people's children
starve in rich people's backyards - literally, back then, in the huts
hidden behind the hedge on the other side of the swimming pool. "But
why didn't they tell us?" And, invariably: "We treat our servants
like human beings." Yeah. Now we're all in each other's backyards,
and it's still just the same, in this world of plenty where there's
more than enough for everyone. Everyone except the greedy. That's
what we do at Journey to Forever, what it's all about - against
hunger and poverty and injustice.

The rich are rich and the poor poor because that's the natural order
of things, because we live in some kind of meritocracy and each gets
their just deserts? Sure, right. The poor are poor *because* the rich
are rich. Blind ignorance of the rich that their privileges are at
the expense of others' suffering is bad enough. When it's wilfully
blind that's much worse. When the privileges showered on them are
wasted, producing nothing but a slack-minded, useless fool, that's
worse still. When that fool *sneers* at those at whose expense he
benefits, in their faces, it becomes hard to bear. And then claims he
has the *right* to his grossly unfair share, and "too bad for the
rest" - and that over oil supplies, which is not just a matter of a
grossly unjust world economic system, oil has rather more to do with
the brute force that backs up that unjust world economic system, with
millions dead worldwide in collateral damage over the last
half-century.
http://infoarchive.net/sgroup/BIOFUEL/32425/

And over the next half-century too, if he has his way. Too bad, eh?

"Step outside" doesn't work very well in the virtual world, and I
reject that response anyway. The other impulse was to spike his
message and just give the guy the boot without any further ado. He'd
probably have yelled "Censorship!" and whined about "free speech" and
his "rights", but who cares? And in his terms he'd've "won". But who
cares? Well, maybe I did. Maybe I was wrong. Maybe I should have just
kicked him out and spiked it. How could it not be divisive, on a
global list like this, and indeed unfair to the other Americans? So,
dear friends, please accept my humble apologies for allowing this
ugly scene to get as far as it did, and for any damage done. I can't
say I wouldn't do it again though.

Anyway, predictably, Brian refused to apologise "for reality" as he
put it. I told him bigotry had little to do with reality and threw
him out. Can't say I'm sad to see him go. I'm aware that there are
others here who share his views. Maybe this incident will give them
some pause. Hope springs eternal.

>Happy Happy,

Yes indeed Gustl.

Best wishes
