I liked a friend's wonderfully simple plan for cutting car fuel consumption by 100% - and emissions too, therefore, though we didn't think much about emissions back then.
He said all you had to do was to put really big wheels on the back and really small ones on the front and then the car would run downhill and you wouldn't need the engine.
