Logan, I think you are talking about the ammonia/hypochlorous acid reaction. It produces Nitrogen trichloride.
NH3 +3 HClO --> NCl(3) + 3H2O combining lye and hypochlorous acid (chlorine bleach) doesn't produce chlorine gas, only sodium hypochlorite.
