This game is one of my most favorite hacks of all time.  Using the MIDI
thru port to cobble together a serial-based network is brilliant! 
Another favorite hack of mine was any game that produced digitized sound
using just the internal speaker when the computer itself did *not* have
any specialized sound hardware.  The technique, common across many
platforms (Apple and IBM at least), can be roughly described as "pulsing
the speaker faster than it can physically respond".
