Philo Agora's talk next Tuesday, June 30 will be Abhijit Pal on Suicide, Literature and Philosophy: To Be or Not to Be?

Suicide is a popular theme in both literature ( Shakespeare's "To be or not to be") and philosophy (Camus referred to it as the one truly serious philosophical problem). In the midst of an increasing awareness of mental health issues in the community, why have both these fields been largely absent from public discourse on suicide? Current attitudes are based on the medical model of suicide, as a pathological state in urgent need of treatment (antidepressants) and intervention by health professionals. What are the reasons for this? What is to be done (if anything)?

Abhijit is currently a student in medicine who should be spending less time on philosophy. He graduated with a first class honours degree in neuroscience from the University of Sydney and intends to undertake research in psychiatry. He is President of the Russellian Society at the University of Sydney.

Tuesday June 30. at the Fair Trade Coffee House, 33 Glebe Point Road, Glebe, $6.00 includes a free cup of coffee or tea. Start at 7.30. Finish at 9.00pm. If you want a meal, come early. All profits from the Fair Trade Cafe go to support Third World development.
