Back when I was young, the RSS 0.91 spec recommended that an image should be 88x31. No one has really paid attention to this, and I don't think the feed validator cares. I have generally been ok with a size of up to 150x150 or so. When I see something larger I generally make a gentle recommendation to the feed owner.
This reminds me, I did some cool visualization work with feed images a while ago. Hmmm, where did I put that code?
