I'm just experimenting with Red Hat 8.0 Linux, on an old dual 200MHz Pentium Pro machine (aka "TheRack"). I don't really know what I'm doing but I did find something about turning on AppleTalk. I did. Now from my OS 6.0.8 Mac IIci (ethernet) I can see that machine in the chooser (Appleshare 3.5) and share files. I could also do the same with a G3 upgraded PPC 6100 running OS 9.1. But although I can "see" it, I cannot connect with my recently upgraded PowerBook G4 12" running 10.3.5. (incompatible afp message).
Doesn't that strike you as odd? Is a linux server going to be the heart of my network?
John,
Are you running AppleTalk on the PowerBook?
There are several technologies here, and they are described very nicely on this page:

Does anyone have the System 6-based AppleShare server software? As I mentioned earlier, I wonder if OS X's AppleShare client can talk to the System 6 AppleShare server. i.e. I wonder what exactly is missing that Panther no longer serves System 6 clients. Knowing that (i.e. knowing the problem) is the first step to solving the problem.
I do know that System 7 clients can access Panther servers with a new enough version of Open Transport. This tells me that Panther is now only serving via TCP/IP. Since the trick on Marten's page doesn't work with Panther, I did some more googling and found that the same setting is in /Library/Preferences/com.apple.AppleFileServer.plist; the setting is called useAppleTalk and is set to false.
I wonder if one of you with a currently working System 6/OS X network could set that to true, restart your OS X box, and report back whether System 6 (or 7, just for trivia) works.
