@ Harald Don't worry, I've had worse directed at me. It will not stop me from contributing or talking on the mail list in the future. I've learned to have tough skin.
I personally prefer to just trace off of Bing, as I've been mostly doing this in the US (where I live) to fix up highways that need to be twinned. As you can see here on my OSM profile, I've done a lot of work cleaning up stuff. ( http://www.openstreetmap.org/user/rickmastfan67 ) Heck, I rebuilt all of I-81 & I-26 in TN from scratch when the license change happened. And recently, when Bing updated their imagery along the Ontario {69}/{400} corridor, I added in the missing alignment of freeway that opened up in 2012 (See Changeset #17551435). Imports are just not my style. I rather be able to see imagery that proves an alignment for a highway. -James Date: Wed, 2 Oct 2013 10:18:43 -0400 From: kli...@gmail.com To: ve6...@gmail.com CC: talk-ca@openstreetmap.org Subject: Re: [Talk-ca] Larder Lake, Ontario completely missing James E, you might not have intended it that way, but your email came across as pretty hostile. If I had been the recipient, I certainly would not have been encouraged to contribute but to never ever mail to this list again. @James M.: Thanks for your initial email. The problem you pointed out has been solved and OSM just got a little better again. To the point about access to Canvec/Geobase data for the road names: If you use JOSM it's very easy: just go to "imagery" and choose "Geobase Roads." I usually trace the roads from bing and then use the Geobase layer for the road names and to check the plausibility of my traces. Harald. When we all wait for someone else to do something, we can wait a long time. > 3. Yes, it helps to be familiar with areas that you are importing, however we don't have enough OSM mappers in Canada to be able to have the luxury of having people familiar with each area importing those areas. > So, in other words, I wanted to leave it to somebody that knows the Canvec > data better as I've never done an import. And still you have never done an import, so you're safe. The next place you would like to see added to OSM, you can use the same reasoning. I'm not trying to pick on you specifically, but rather just point out flaws in the rationale behind NOT being a participating member in the OSM community. Only your second point is reasonable... making sure you are coordinated with the rest of the community is a good thing. We probably have an awful lot of people sitting on their hands saying "I don't have access to the data", and "Someone else will import it", and finally "I've never done it before". That's the wrong attitude to have on a crowd-sourced project like OSM. Get in there, learn where to get the data (BTW, OSM is not sole sourced from CanVec), learn how to edit the map, and help everyone gain access to a better map! I know I hear a lot of people complain about the quality of OSM maps in other projects that use OSM maps, and I go through the same "lecture" with them. If you don't like what you see on the map, get in there and get your hands dirty. -- James VE6SRV And yes, I've been sitting on my hands for a long time as well, so I'm as guilty as you. _______________________________________________ Talk-ca mailing list Talk-ca@openstreetmap.org https://lists.openstreetmap.org/listinfo/talk-ca -- Please use encrypted communication whenever possible!
