I suspect other countries didn't suffer the stupidity of a Dr Beeching in the way we did.
At the time I recall most of the arguments being about railways appearing through housing estates and the solution seemed to be to hide them rather than leave them and allow local mappers to correct the tagging. If its gone and not visible then it should be tagged historic, rather than abandoned. I think this, and blue motorways, is a good argument for why we need a UK render of the map.
