Eugene,

Magandang project yan! This is actually important as it can be used not only
for recreation purposes but even for search and rescue efforts.

I am thinking, if we could start on a case site like a national park that is
frequently visited by  visitors both seasoned and not seasoned climbers. For
example Mt. Pulag National Park. Given the traffic it gets the whole year, the
benefits of having a gps map of the park complete with trail and waypoints has
a very high potential.  For the past years, I was doing trail survey data with
the UP Mountaineers and we have covered Ambangeg/Ambaguio/Akiki/ and just
recently Tinoc trail.

For those people who might be interested, a DRAFT result of the trail survey
can be downloaded from this link:

https://www.yousendit.com/download/MzZFblFKbWdoeVpjR0E9PQ
password: @MtPNP_Draft

The trails are already in OSM and some of the waypoints.

For the contour data, I do have a digital files based from NAMRIA 1:50K topo
maps and if our mappers would want to compile this, I can upload it somewhere
for downloads.

Napapanahon itong idea na ito.

eugene,
you got my point exactly!
been climbing mountains myself recently. last data uploaded by me in osm was
trail to summit in kanlaon via guintubdan trail. trail tracks are very useful
particularly in the outdoors. you need not rely 100 percent on the gps but i
feel safer with this info uploaded to my gps.

this is also helpful in search and rescue operations particularly in the
mountains where road maps are not that important. we need topo maps in these
mountains plus trail maps and waypoints.

i still havent uploaded my waypoints but i usually save campsites, water
source, rest stops, and other important points along the trail sucj as
landmarks. and of course the summits. (so when i hike with people who keep on
asking "are we there yet?" i can easily say we are about so and so kilometers
away and it will take us about so and so hours hehe) was able to do this during
recent climb to pulag :)

anyway i hope you guys (the compilers) hear me on this. :) i dont know if i can
learn the process but you can rely on me for data gathering :)

Well, if you want to get your hands dirty, you can actually DIY! The

Garmin maps are compiled using mkgmap and you just need the raw OSM

data (Geofabrik provides Philippine data extracts), the contour data

(maybe Maning can share his data, but they were made using Groundtruth

from NASA's SRTM data), and mkgmap itself (plus some learning time).

But, we could additionally adopt your suggestion and consider adding

another Garmin map download which has the consolidated contours for

selected mountaineering peaks, and make the hiking/trekking trails

more prominent. A mountaineer's map anyone?

Hmmm, thinking about it, I actually like the idea! Instead of

targeting only the car owners with the OSM Garmin map, we could also

"expand the market" and target also the mountaineering clubs. A Garmin

map that still contains roads (so the mountaineers can drive to the

base camps and jump-off points) plus prominent hiking trails and

contours would be a perfect addition. And if this map becomes popular,

then we have another potential source of contributors who can map the

rural and mountainous areas. :-D
