I should expand that statement. No, you're not missing something, it's a fairly straightforward problem and your solution is fairly straightforward and practical. However, there are some people who don't know how they would process the osm data, and instead of thinking that their knowledge, skills or experience in geo-data is insufficient, they automatically think that because they can't figure it out then there's something wrong with the way that everyone else is doing things. And so we start inventing new ideas with sufficient buzzwords (I hereby patent the semantic-relation) and talk about them to death. I guess that's why it's the talk@ mailing list and not the do@ ?
