Yup, it's one thing or the other. Maybe some future version of AUI
will allow saving of tabs and then I'll probably go back to the
notebook widget, but for the time being I think persistence of the
layout is more important for usability than having the notebook.

This is indeed an old issue. Apparently some window manager send a
'minimize' event to applications when the user switches virtual
desktops. As far as I know there is no way to distinguish between a
user doing a minimize and the window manager doing the minimize.
