This is a strength, not a weakness. This is a quick filter. If you hold down the Alt key while selecting someones name in the From column you will get a list of messages only from that person. Or if you click on the subject whil holding the Alt key you will get all messages with that subject line. Further if you do a filter of this sort in one account it affects all accounts, so you can find all messages from Joe in every account you have. Very useful for multiple accounts.
