No, Alexander, it's not really mathematical at all. But it is quite
like the outline numbering system that is a standard feature in just
about any word processor (for example, FrameMaker, MS Word). And, FWIW
(although only Allie seems to have a block here), in the outline
numbering system, 3.9 would be followed by 3.10. So anyone who has
read a book with numbered chapters and sections should be familiar
with the system.
