Actually it's :
IF (not A) OR ((not B) OR (not C)) THEN move to trash
Once you place a string in the alternatives area it's an OR string
match that's done.
I have a single filter setup for my friends for instance. Whenever I
wish to filter someones mail to my friends folder, I just add their
e-mail address as a filter string under the alternative section. Hence
*any* single e-mail address in the alternatives section will trigger the
filter.
The only way to produce an and effect is to add filter strings to the
'filter strings' section under the Rules section.

Now *that's* not confusing and a good suggestion. However, in my
experience with these filters, his present rule would be equivalent.
