Hello Marck & other fellow TB! Users,

Sunday, December 03, 2000, you stated in reference to indexing the
TBUDL digest :

MDP>>> Sorry to say that there's no way of doing that. The digests
MDP>>> we issue from TBUDL are just a simple text stream.

DH>> You mean the TBUDL digest isn't indexed?

MDP> It is not :-(. Actually, to be fair, one cannot "index" a
MDP> digest unless it is HTML,

I'm not sure that's true. I was getting a digest that was indexed
after asking for that and it's not html - it's just text. I could
forward or redirect an issue to your personal email account if you
like. Or send the header info w/ the index & part of the text. (I
finally did that below).

I also get an non-indexed html text newsletter (the list-owner
refuses to index or offer a plain text version. This man can also be
referred to as a ******). It happens to be a good "free e-mail
newsletter" though, otherwise; that "welcomes contributions" (it
doesn't get from me).

MDP> and I think most present know what I personally think of HTML
MDP> mail.

You're not alone. It doubles the size of the file, often has ugly
backgrounds and the tags can cause problems when answering it. I've
canceled some newsletters that use it (with no text option) for that
reason.

MDP> The only thing that could be done to improve a plain text
MDP> digest AFAIK is to use MIME digest format. TB handles these
MDP> well by offering a virtual folder in which to browse the digest
MDP> as individual messages.

Could you explain that (or point to a reference)?

DH>> If so, I strongly suggest listing the subject headers (maybe w/
DH>> the from header) at the beginning. Would that be difficult?.

MDP> Not merely difficult... impossible with the current release of
MDP> the server engine we use. It is on the manufacturers wish-list
MDP> to improve the digest aspects of the list server software.

(Netscape Messaging Server 3.62) with SMTP id 211
X-Mailer: Allaire Cold Fusion 3.1

That's what the headers say are being used with the indexed digest I
referred to. Perhaps you could explain the technical differences
that permit the above to do what evidently can't happen w/ the
server engine being used with TBUDL. Maybe the X-Mailer has nothing
to do with it (does it)?

DH>> A digest that lacks this is far worse than separate messages
DH>> and practically useless, IMO.

MDP> IMO too. ...

BTW - the folkloric spanish words I mentioned in the thread re an
abusive policy by one ISP re CCs & BCCs are not considered profanity
by local spanish speaking natives (I asked), any more than pubic
hair or rectum would be in English, if they formed part of the
etymological origin of an English metaphor. It's the associated
inference by analogy that makes them especially useful for
describing banal & idiotic behavior perpetrated by anal compulsive
corporate entities such as the one described.

However, I agree that these phrases should be reserved for those
situations in which they're timely and appropriate, and TBUDL may
not be best place for that (I just figured they might be of interest
or come in handy one of these days for a list member). In any case,
I'll remember that for future posts (although the words really are
considered to be more slang or colorful colloquialisms than
profanity and that like anything else, can be used properly or
improperly).

I'm going to paste in the (short) index and part of the first item
from one of these digests, in order to be sure we're discussing the
same thing. Maybe the index is hand made? Couldn't a macro be made
to extract each message's subject header and placed with a symbol +
a space in front at the beginning of the day's TBUDL digest?
