The advanced option states:

"The filter is only active within this time interval" and you're
provided the means to state your time interval.

Putting that awkward help file explanation aside, the option statement
is pretty self-explanatory. <shrug> The filter will be active within the
time period (of a 24hr day) you specify. This therefore cannot be used
to automatically mark messages as read 2 hours after they've reached the
inbox.
