FYI, the current beta has Shift-JIS encoding in the XLAT manager (Options -> XLAT tables). Maybe it's worth a look (note: I thought in Shift-JIS it is possible that one character is encoded as a multibyte sequence, it's not possible in an XLAT table, or is it?)
