The difference between use of S/MIME and PGP is a conceptual one.
S/MIME relies on a centralised signer (certificate issuer), PGP relies
completely on what Phil Zimmermann called "Web of Trust" - public keys
have to be signed by other people.

The details of the idea behind the Web of Trust are a bit complicated
but can be read up on in the introduction to PGP by Phil Zimmermann.
You can obtain it by downloading the manual from Imad's site or from

In short, I am all for PGP.
