These things are addressed in the Welcome to The List letter, but until one is more familiar with the protocol, that language doesn't sink into even a conscientious head in a practical way. (At least, it didn't into mine.) I wonder if that Welcome letter could be revised to put the two or three things a Newcomer first wants to try, right up front--perhaps even in the Netiquettely Rude Capitals or Bold.
