I apologize for replying to myself, but here's a small update... I have no idea why, but when I got to my computer this morning, I'm no longer noticing the problem described above. While CPU usage during email polling still jumps around (also sometimes spiking to 100%), I'm not currently experiencing the "sluggish mouse" syndrome as I have the past several days. As far as I know, I haven't done anything differently. Even though this problem has mysteriously disappeared (for the moment, anyway), I'd still be interested in comments from anyone who has experienced this anomaly, so that I might be able to avoid it in the future.
