No. Just only because it's not true; it wasn't Microsoft's making, but
they just followed the modern times.

That's more likely the cause of the change than a company marketing
computer software. Typewriters evolved.

I don't the use double space, and I prefer fix-font rather than
proportinal font.

No, I think it's a culture thing. In Europe (well, Germany) we never
learned double-spacing after a period, and that is true for both
myself and my mother.

I later learned that in setting books (with proportinal fonts), double
spacing after the period is normal. At least in the English language,
I would actually have to wake up dear old Aunt Google to check whether
this would be true for German as well.

It's a matter of taste. I am surprised (and happy for those who want
to use it) to learn that TB! accomodates double-spacing. Another
feature I won't use...
