We use PGP whole disk encryption - for none of the reasons you offered.  I 
don't 
think impact on backups 

really factored into our equation. It works on both platforms. Linux is command 
line only, still a redheaded step

The primary reasons for WDE:
1. To protect against loss of Intellectual property. Window smash from a car is 
the single largest source of stolen laptops.
2. Escrowed keys allows management to reassign the property to someone else, as 
people come and go.
